The Hood

The Hood

I propose we plant a flag. I propose we forge a new path forward. I strongly suggest we rename one of the best parts of Seattle. The area in question: The I.D.

The official name of the area is “Chinatown/International District.” I love the ID as it is casually called. Yet I don’t see a great deal of Germans and Nigerians when I am there. The name feels like it misses the mark. I wish there was some catchy Bed Stuy/Dumbo/Sodo style name we could use.

Here’s the thing: once you move to a place that you think you know, you discover that there are micro-hoods you didn’t know of.  Downtown Seattle is Downtown, but it’s also Belltown, The Market, Pioneer Square, First Hill and so on.  These tend to be unofficial designations. So one assumes that at one point in time, some people simply started calling a place by a name.

That completely intuitive and totally based on hearsay method now set established, I propose that we find a better name for the Chinatown/International District (with apologies to those who are wed to it.)  And I think I have it.

I’m not quite sure where this idea emerged, but the name in mind is short, snappy, perhaps catchy and more importantly, denotes a common bond among the cultures. The name? Soy Town.

There you have it, the new name: Soy Town. Learn it, use it, codify it.
